Indonesia and Refugee Diplomacy in Southeast Asia
Project Leader: Dio H. Tobing, SIP
Based on ASEAN Studies Center’s previous research (2016), this research aims to assess the extent to which Indonesia’s refugee diplomacy could respond emerging refugee crisis in the region. Whilst Jokowi administration has declared a presidential decree on asylum seeker that could be positively resolve domestic problems related to refugee and asylum seeker, it is also evident that there is no clear written regulatory framework, in the regional level, on how government institutions deal with the root causes of regional refugee problems. Drawing upon the concept of international legal-political governance, we shall assess the effectiveness of Indonesia’s approach to refugee crsis and how it might be developed into a diplomatic strategy. In so doing, we shall conduct several interviews and observations to relevant stakeholders.
This research will be funded by ASEAN Studies Center’s RKAT Research Fund
